Emergency Department

The Emergency Department (ED) at North Shore University Hospital - Manhasset is a designated New York State Regional Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center. The physicians and nurses of the ED care for more than 70,000 patients per year.

There are over 40 board-certified Emergency Medicine faculty members within the department. The patient population is diverse, with a blend of trauma and high-acuity medical, surgical, pediatric, and gynecological conditions. Pediatric cases comprise a substantial portion of our total volume. The overall admission rate of 39% reflects the high level of critical illness in our patients.

The ED at Manhasset recently completed a $35M capital project that expanded and renovated the department.  The department is composed entirely of private treatment rooms that are dedicated to critical care, pediatrics, psychiatry, isolation, dental, ophthalmology, orthopedics and gynecology.  In total we have 54 treatment rooms as well as an advanced diagnostic imaging area and a newly installed PACS system to view radiology images on digital work stations located throughout the department.  The most recently renovated area is the space dedicated to triage, restoration and waiting, which now provides our patients and families with a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing setting and a greater degree of privacy.

In addition to the clinical area, the department has dedicated space for administrative and faculty offices in an extensive resident lounge with PCs and other amenities, and a conference center with a hi-tech audio-visual system.
